For the second year in a row, Winnipeg has won a coveted spot on the Intelligent Community Forum’s list of Smart21 Communities.

The Smart21 announcement is the first stage of ICF's annual Intelligent Community Awards cycle. The awards recognize 21 communities for their use of broadband technology to facilitate social and economic development. It is followed by the naming of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities of the Year, selected from among the 21. Winnipeg is one of four Canadian cities recognized this year. The 2012 list also includes Quebec City, Quebec; Stratford, Ontario; and St. John, New Brunswick.

Foreign direct investment attraction project

EDW is developing a targeted strategy for attracting foreign investment. In attaining consensus and alignment among stakeholders, the initiative will result in a five-year growth strategy for key industry sectors, complete with an action plan specifying tools and processes for 2011 and 2012.

This is made possible by funding support from Invest Canada-Community Initiatives, a component of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada's Global Commerce Support Program. The Invest Canada-Community Initiatives (ICCI) is designed to help communities attract, retain and expand foreign direct investment.

Financial literacy, capital planning, entrepreneurship education pilot training program

With funding assistance provided by National Research Council Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP), EDW has developed a pilot program for the provision of direct service benefits to selected firms to help them develop and advance their business enterprise through expert financial coaching services.

This program will also demonstrate the value of financial literacy education and enterprise training services and explore the best delivery mechanism for providing such services on a long-term sustainable basis to the Winnipeg business community.
