According to Statistics Canada (2009), Winnipeg’s population was 675,100, with 742,400 people living in the Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) according to the latest Conference Board of Canada projections.
Of the CMA population, 49% were male and 51% were female. The median age of a Winnipegger was 38.1 years of age, compared to an average of 39.0 years of age for Canada as a whole. From 2003 to 2007, Winnipeg’s population grew by 0.54% on average.
The increasing population base is largely attributed to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This program provides a broad framework to recruit and nominate skilled workers and business immigrants who have a strong likelihood of becoming successfully established and make a positive contribution to the province. This program helps co-ordinate business, labour and government interests in expanding employment and business enterprises in Manitoba through immigration.
