The impact of growth was measured through 10 key industry sectors in Winnipeg. They were viewed critical to the region’s economy and linked uniquely to the innovation process. Overall, the 10 sectors comprised of 168,000 employed people and represented 41% of all employment in Winnipeg. Both the transportation and distribution and tourism sector held the biggest share of employment at 10% each.
Over the last five years, the Winnipeg economy added 3,300 jobs among the 10 key industry sectors. Driving this growth were the life sciences, ICT, aerospace and advanced manufacturing industry sectors, all experienced steady employment growth with a growth rate of 4% to 5% per year over the last five years. Employment growth was not strong in both the financial and energy and environment sectors. Less than 1% growth on average was apparent with each of these sectors.
