Senior Data Engineer

Economic Development Winnipeg is looking for a Senior Data Engineer who is passionate about data and eager to build a data platform that improves organizational results. This role will experience a wider range of problem-solving situations requiring extensive use of data collection and analysis The Senior Data Engineer will look for innovative ways to provide service and continuous improvement opportunities and demonstrate excellence in reporting key performance indicators for the company. Reporting to the Director of Research & Market Intelligence the incumbent will facilitate requirements gathering and systems testing with internal and external clients. The role will work closely with staff from all other departments to ensure that technology development projects are properly scoped, defined, tested, and implemented.


  • Employ a variety of languages and tools to query databases, create scripts, and connect systems together;
  • Support data-driven decision-making by enabling actionable insights from disparate data sources and implementing key innovation opportunities for stakeholders;
  • Design and implement an efficient and scalable data engineering framework that powers stakeholders’ insights;
  • Design and drive data architecture for future data storage, processing, and applications.
  • Design, develop, and maintain critical data pipelines;
  • Research, develop, modify, and deploy data-collection processes;
  • Develop policies and techniques for gathering and analyzing data;Review and validate incoming data;
  • Collaborate regularly with various departments and staff members;
  • Ensure the data quality and integrity in databases and reports; and
  • Ensure compliance with data governance and security policies.


  • BS or BA in Computer Science, Information Systems, or demonstrated equivalent experience is required;
  • 4+ years of experience with ETL, data modeling, and data architecture is required;
  • 2+ years of experience with Python, Scala or other scripting languages is required;
  • Experience working with/developing REST/SOAP APIs is required;
  • Proficiency in SQL is required;
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based computing services is required;
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment is required;
  • Build and deliver high quality data solutions to accelerate our data governance and data quality processes is required;
  • Experience with data visualization reporting tools Tableau or Power BI is an asset;
  • Experience with AWS is an asset; and
  • Knowledge of containers and orchestration (e.g. Docker, Airflow, Kubernetes) is an asset.
