April 24, 2012: Winnipeg, MB – Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. (EDW) is hosting their annual general meeting today, showcasing highlights of activities undertaken in 2011. Highlights and accomplishments for EDW; Tourism Winnipeg, a division of EDW; and Yes! Winnipeg, an initiative within EDW, will be showcased at the event. Guests will hear greetings from Provincial Minister of Finance, Stan Struthers; Mayor Sam Katz; Mary Jane Loustel, chair of the board of EDW; and a keynote address by Marina James, president and CEO of EDW.

“Our focus this year was to use the solid foundation we built in 2010 to gain momentum and capitalize on the excitement and development in the city. Our mandate, to increase investment and visitation to the city, guided all our activities in 2011,“ said Marina James, president and CEO, Economic Development Winnipeg Inc.

An electronic copy of the 2011 Economic Development Winnipeg annual report will be available following the AGM at www.economicdevelopmentwinnipeg.com.

In conjunction with the annual general meeting, EDW is releasing 10 strategic sector profiles which highlight Winnipeg’s key industries and is launching a dynamic video series aimed at promoting Winnipeg’s diverse and stable economy.

Produced with the assistance of RDA Global, a market research and economic analysis consultancy that specializes in sector analysis, and in close collaboration with key industry stakeholders, the sector profiles reveal opportunities for new business while benchmarking Winnipeg’s comparative advantages including unique attributes, costs, productivity and workforce. These profiles serve to facilitate investment in the city by communicating Winnipeg’s unique value proposition in a compelling way and by raising awareness of Winnipeg’s key strengths, opportunities, advantages and success stories.

The development of the sector profiles was a tightly focused community effort and has forged connections between investors and local industry players, fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation surrounding economic development in the city. Stakeholder participation included round table meetings to identify key priorities, interviews and surveys, and a review of the findings prior to finalization of the profiles.
The sector profiles, as well as sector briefs and company profiles, can be found here.

To complement the development of the sector profiles, EDW is launching a dynamic video series, GROW in WINNIPEG, aimed at promoting the city and its diverse investment opportunities. Narrated and hosted by local media personality, Peter Jordan, these videos provide a glimpse of the Winnipeg business climate and increase EDW’s presence in social media.

Being released today are four videos: English and French versions of a LIVE in WINNIPEG overview; an introduction to the series; an economic assets and sector highlights video; and our first industry-specific video, ADVANCED MANUFACTURING in WINNIPEG.

The GROW in WINNIPEG videos can be found on EDW’s YouTube channel here.
Media is invited to attend the 2012 annual general meeting on April 24 at the Fort Garry Hotel. The event starts at 11 a.m. Interviews will take place immediately following the presentation.
