Economic Development Inc. Hosts 2013 Annual General Meeting Showcasing 2012 Highlights and Successes

April 16, 2013: Winnipeg, MB – Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. (EDW) is hosting its annual general meeting today, showcasing highlights of activities undertaken in 2012. Notable accomplishments across all EDW operations will be featured. Guests will hear greetings from Provincial Minister of Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade Peter Bjornson; Mayor Sam Katz; and Mary Jane Loustel, chair of the board for EDW. Marina James, EDW’s president and CEO, will deliver the keynote address.

“Notable strides were made throughout 2012 in delivering on our mandate, which is to increase investment and visitation to our city,” said Marina James, president and CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. “Our focus was to advance several key initiatives in consequential ways, and I’m pleased to report that we’ve risen to this challenge. As the lead economic development agency for Winnipeg, we’re proud to play a vital role in helping to create an economically vibrant city that continues to attract interest worldwide.”

EDW furthered its long-term platform in 2012 with the development and launch of the City of Winnipeg’s 2013-2017 Economic Development Strategy—a five-year strategy built to further the principal municipal planning document, OurWinnipeg. This progressive initiative focuses on Winnipeg’s existing strengths while exploring new economic development opportunities.

EDW also continued to participate in the Consider Canada City Alliance, comprised of 11 major Canadian cities united in their vision to promote Canada’s multifaceted trade and investment opportunities to international audiences. Complementing this initiative, EDW developed a foreign direct investment (FDI) strategy to guide Winnipeg’s collaborative actions moving forward.

For its part, Tourism Winnipeg made substantial progress in actualizing second-year activities outlined in the comprehensive 2011-2015 Master Tourism Plan, a five-year plan created to position Winnipeg for tourism industry growth. Tourism Winnipeg promoted things to see and do in Winnipeg via its award-winning website and led the way on digital and traditional marketing campaigns throughout 2012, including a monthly e-newsletter, spring/summer and fall/winter events guides, and the 2013 Visitor’s guide.

An electronic copy of EDW’s 2012 annual report will be available following the AGM via its website at www.economicdevelopmentwinnipeg.com.

Media is invited to attend EDW’s annual general meeting today at the Radisson Hotel in room Ambassador A, located in downtown Winnipeg at 288 Portage Avenue. The event starts at 11 a.m. Interviews will be welcomed immediately following the formal proceedings.
