No one can deny the power and effectiveness of a good video. They make us laugh, cry and of course, want to share with our friends and colleagues.
According to We Are Social and Hootsuite’s Digital 2020 report, 91 per cent of Canadians watch online videos each month, with YouTube being the most-used social media platform for people in this country.
Tripwire Media Group has been at the video-making game in Winnipeg since 2009, working with a diverse client pool ranging from longtime Canadian institutions like Scotiabank and The North West Company to the latest social video sharing sensation, TikTok.

What these companies have in common is a desire to have unique stories told about their businesses and services. Telling a good story isn’t just about the art of video production and editing, there’s a lot of science behind making an effective video, as well.
“Our brains are really connected to a well-told story,” says Tripwire’s CEO and Executive Creative Director, Doug Darling, who co-founded the company. “The science of it is really how you tell it and how you structure it and also know how it works on you on a biological level. When we tell a good story, it moves us to action.”
Since the pandemic began in March, companies have had to take a closer look at how they market themselves and demand for video as a marketing tool is skyrocketing. Film and video production companies like Tripwire have had to get creative with some of their offerings to still be able to provide the services businesses want in a safe way.
“You figure out how you work around that,” says Darling. “Everything from having smaller crews and social distancing and we’ve actually used Zoom and Teams interviews and were able to package that in a way that makes it really authentic.”
Another option is animation, which allows the producer and business to work remotely, collaborate on a look and feel that matches the company’s brand and to be far more creative in what can be shown.
“You can show someone at a desk on a computer in animation as easily as you can show someone going to the moon,” adds Darling.
According to Darling, Tripwire’s animated video offerings start at about the same price as a traditional video.
